Rafting Terms Explained for Travellers

Understand common rafting words before your Rishikesh trip: launch, take-out, rapids, grades, portage, buoyancy aids and support kayaks.

Rafting descriptions use words that can sound like a suitability rating. Understanding the terms helps you ask useful questions, but it does not replace a route assessment or the guide's briefing.

River and itinerary words

Term Plain-language meaning What to ask
Put-in Place where the river journey starts Where is ours, and how do we reach it?
Take-out Place where the river journey ends Where do we change and go afterwards?
Rapid A section of more complex or disturbed moving water Which are relevant to our proposed route?
Pool A comparatively quieter section between features What activities, if any, are permitted here?
Portage Going around a river section by land When might this be required in our plan?
River time Estimated time on the water What is the total time including transfers?

A route's commercial name is not a complete itinerary. Always confirm the actual put-in and take-out. See route comparisons.

Rapid grades or classes

Grades describe whitewater characteristics and are useful context for experienced planners. They should not be used as a fixed promise that a section is safe or suitable for you. Water level and other conditions affect the actual trip decision.

Ask the operating team to explain the character of the proposed stretch, the requirements for participants and how conditions may change the plan. Do not choose by grade alone or copy a grade from a different season.

Equipment and crew words

A buoyancy aid or personal flotation device is required equipment under the trip's procedures, not an approval for every person to participate. Ask the crew to check the fit and follow instructions about wearing it.

A guide directs the trip and crew actions. Support can include other personnel or equipment such as a safety kayak, depending on the planned operation. Ask what is provided rather than assuming that a photograph shows every departure's arrangement.

A participant remains part of the crew. You need to follow seating, paddle and other instructions. The first-trip guide describes the sequence.

Booking words

A shared departure can combine people from different bookings. A private arrangement can mean exclusive raft capacity, transport or a departure, but these are distinct services. Ask exactly what is reserved.

“Pickup” and “transfer” should identify endpoints. A transfer to the launch may not cover your hotel. Check location and pricing.

When a word is unclear

Ask before paying or launching. A provider should be able to explain its itinerary and instructions in language you understand. Read safety guidance and send your questions.
