A Complete Planning Guide to River Rafting in Rishikesh

A complete planning guide to Ganga rafting in Rishikesh: river geography, route labels, costs, preparation, booking and travel decisions.

Rafting group paddling through a forested river gorgePlan clearly. Paddle confidently.

River rafting in Rishikesh combines a river journey with an organised adventure activity. To plan well, understand the actual stretch you will travel, who is operating it, what participants need to do and how the land transfers fit around it. This guide connects the main decisions in one place.

Understand the river and place names

The Ganga flows through the Rishikesh area after the Alaknanda and Bhagirathi meet at Devprayag. Starting areas such as Kaudiyala, Marine Drive, Shivpuri and Brahmpuri appear in rafting itineraries upstream of town. An accommodation address in Tapovan or near Lakshman Jhula is a separate piece of the plan.

You may hear both “Ganga” and “Ganges” in English descriptions. In this website, Ganga refers to the same river discussed in Rishikesh rafting enquiries.

For broader river context, GMVN's rafting information describes the Ganga below Devprayag. Its page includes historical rates and dates, which should not be used as this website's current prices or rules.

Your rafting booking includes a licensed, qualified guide, transport for the rafting outing, a life jacket, helmet and paddle. Hotel pickup is included where the location permits; collection may be from your hotel or the nearest suitable meeting point. Confirm the actual pickup arrangement in advance.

Water and a waterproof bag for a phone are available. Storage for luggage and extra clothing can be arranged on request. The phone bag is for a phone, not general luggage, and is not a guarantee against damage or loss. Photos and videos cost extra.

We offer Brahmpuri, Shivpuri, Marine Drive and Kaudiyala. Marine Drive and Kaudiyala require advance group booking. Contact us for Kaudiyala’s actual itinerary, timing and price; broad route labels below are general planning context.

Decode the route labels

Travel advertisements commonly use labels such as 9 km Brahmpuri, 16 km Shivpuri, 24–26 km Marine Drive and 35–36 km Kaudiyala. These are planning references, not precise measurements or confirmed products on this website. Finish points and descriptions vary between providers.

The Uttarakhand Tourism itinerary describes a 16 km Shivpuri-to-Rishikesh stretch and a roughly 36 km longer outing. Individual operators describe other stretches differently. The practical solution is to ask for the exact start and finish in the quote, then confirm the approximate length for that itinerary.

Label you may encounter What you should confirm
Brahmpuri / short rafting Actual length, finish and participant requirements
Shivpuri / 16 km Whether that label matches the proposed itinerary
Marine Drive / 24 or 26 km Which finish and stretch the number refers to
Kaudiyala / 35 or 36 km Full route, demands, rapid management and timing

See route comparisons and distance versus difficulty. A number does not approve a route for an individual.

Understand the terms in a rafting description

A put-in is the place where a river journey starts; a take-out is where it ends. A rapid is a section of disturbed, faster or more complex moving water. A pool is a comparatively quieter section; it is not automatically safe for unsupervised swimming.

A portage involves going around a section by land where the operating team plans or requires it. A safety kayak is a support arrangement; its presence does not remove the trip's risk. Ask what support is actually planned for your route.

Descriptions may use a rapid grade or class. These describe whitewater characteristics, but conditions affect the actual hazard and the crew's decision. Read rafting terminology and ask the guide about the proposed route rather than assigning yourself a grade from a blog.

Choose the outing for the least ready participant

Make a list of actual ages, previous experience and swimming ability. Include whether anyone feels uncertain about getting wet, following paddling commands or spending a longer time on the river. Share relevant health and mobility concerns privately.

Then ask which available trip suits the group. A group of confident friends still needs assessment. A family booking does not automatically approve every child. A non-swimmer should disclose ability before paying. Our safety page sets out the questions.

Do not use route distance as a proxy for safety. Choose a trip that is suitable and permitted on your date, even if that means changing the original plan.

Budget for the full service

Compare the same route and date, then check transfers, guiding, equipment, taxes and optional services. Ask whether photos, hotel pickup, meals, thermal layers or insurance are included rather than inferring them from an image.

For a group, clarify the difference between a private raft, dedicated transport and a private departure. For an overnight package, identify the accommodation property and which meals are included. Read prices, group trips and camping combinations.

Prepare for the reporting point and the river

Save the written reporting pin and departure contact. Ask how you reach the launch and where you finish. If you drive, agree where the car remains and how you return to it. If you stay across the river from a pickup point, check current access rather than assuming the crossing.

Use wet-weather-appropriate clothing and accepted footwear, with dry clothes for afterwards. Ask about date-specific layers and storage. Leave unnecessary valuables behind and follow the crew's equipment fitting and full briefing. See location and packing.

Keep the season and day-specific decision separate

A usual operating season is not a promise that a trip runs on every day within it. Conditions, restrictions and crew decisions may change the route or prevent departure. Old reopening notices and forecasts should not be treated as live confirmation.

Our season guide is general planning guidance. Ask directly close to the travel date and keep some flexibility in accommodation and onward transport.

Our participation and booking requirements

Our participant age bracket is 14–60 years. Participants must be healthy; people with heart or lung problems are not eligible under our booking requirements. Tell us about any other relevant health, mobility or swimming concern privately before paying. Age eligibility alone does not guarantee participation: the guide must also assess suitability, equipment fit and conditions.

Solo guests can join shared departures, with a minimum of four people to run. Private raft groups must book in advance, and Marine Drive and Kaudiyala are advance group booking only; contact us for Kaudiyala details and price.

Advance payment is required to reserve rafting. The advance is non-refundable for customer cancellation. Refunds or a transfer/rescheduling of the booking may be provided only when weather problems affect the trip, subject to confirmation by the team. Read the cancellation policy before paying.

Book with written terms

Your quotation and confirmation should identify the operating business, participants, route, timing, total price, inclusions and reporting point. Read how changes, cancellation, missed reporting and screening outcomes are handled.

The booking page explains the process. Use the FAQ for quick questions, or send an enquiry with your group and travel details.

Sources and scope

A competitor's menu is evidence of its advertised labels, not confirmation of our rates, routes or eligibility. Reconfirm all operational facts for your booking.
