A non-swimmer should disclose their swimming ability before booking and ask whether the proposed trip accepts them after screening. There is no universal answer for every route and condition. A buoyancy aid is essential equipment, but it is not a guarantee of safety or approval to participate.

Tell the operator early

Do not wait until the raft is about to launch. Share swimming ability with the ages and experience of everyone travelling. Ask whether the route recommendation changes and what additional assessment is needed.

If an advertisement says “no swimming required,” ask which trip that applies to and what participant conditions still matter. A general sentence should not override current operating procedures.

Understand what equipment can and cannot do

Properly fitted equipment is one part of managing risk. Moving water also creates hazards that depend on the river, the route and a person's ability to respond to instructions. Do not loosen a buoyancy aid because it feels unfamiliar; ask the crew to check the fit.

The briefing is particularly important. Tell the guide if you need instructions repeated or explained in another language. Practical actions if someone enters the river should be taught by the crew for the actual trip.

Confidence is part of the conversation

Being nervous is information the operator should know. If you are uncomfortable with the activity after hearing the explanation, say so. Pressure from friends is not a good reason to hide a concern.

Consider whether everyone in the group can take part willingly. The first-trip guide describes the outing, and the route hub gives you questions for comparison.

Questions to ask

  • Does this specific available trip accept non-swimmers after assessment?
  • What screening and equipment-fit checks apply?
  • How is the safety briefing delivered?
  • What optional water activities, if any, are separately assessed?
  • What happens if the crew decides I cannot participate?

Do not treat a swimming or body-surfing stop as compulsory. Only join an activity that the crew permits and supervises and that you are comfortable with.

Read safety and eligibility and contact the team before sending a deposit. Website advice cannot make an individual participation decision.
