Rafting, Cliff Jumping and Body Surfing: Separate Decisions

Rafting, Cliff Jumping and Body Surfing: Separate Decisions. Read practical advice, key questions and related rafting guides before booking.

Do not assume cliff jumping or body surfing is included in a rafting booking. These are separate activities with their own hazards and suitability decisions. Only consider an activity that is specifically permitted and supervised under the operating team's procedures.

An advertisement is not permission on the day

Promotional photographs can show optional activities that are not available on every route or departure. Ask what is actually offered and how current conditions affect it. The guide may decide an activity cannot proceed.

A booking should not promise participation regardless of conditions. Read the safety guide before confirming.

Participation should be voluntary

You do not need to join an optional activity to have a worthwhile rafting trip. Tell the crew if you are uncomfortable. Do not allow group pressure or a desire for footage to override your decision.

Swimming ability, equipment and confidence are relevant but do not alone establish suitability. Ask how the operating team assesses each person and what the activity involves.

Follow the actual briefing

Do not copy a technique from a video or another group. Practical instructions need to come from the crew for the conditions and site. Do not enter the river, climb a rock or jump from a height on your own initiative.

If an activity is unavailable, accept the decision. A different water level or location can change hazards that are not obvious from shore.

Ask before paying

  • Is any optional activity actually offered on this departure?
  • Is it included or separately priced?
  • What participant assessment applies?
  • Can I decline without affecting the rafting trip?
  • What happens if conditions prevent it?

Do not make an itinerary depend on an optional river activity. The main booking should still clearly describe the route and service you are buying.

Photography does not change the rules

Recording an activity does not justify ignoring instructions or removing equipment. Ask about the photo arrangements and keep your attention on the crew.

Use the route hub to choose a suitable rafting trip first. Ask about optional activities separately, with realistic expectations.
